Austin Area JETs: Calligraphy Class in Austin

Ms. Michiko Miyata will be holding a beginner calligraphy class on the UT Austin campus. It will be a beginner class, and all materials will be provided. No reservations are necessary!

This class will be a test run, and if it goes well, it may become a regular series during UT’s summer semester beginning in June. Please contact Adam with any other questions.

Japan-America Society DFW Mochitsuki New Year’s Celebration

The Japan-America Society of Dallas/Fort Worth is hosting our 12th annual Mochitsuki New Year’s Celebration on January 15th, 2012. Bring the family to this annual festival presented by the Japan-America Society of Dallas/Fort Worth featuring Japanese New Year traditions. Performers include Kotokai Aikido, Kotomi-kai Koto Ensemble, Dallas Kiyari Daiko, Cherry Blossom Chorus, and Daffron Kids Yosakoi Dancers. Watch rice being pounded for mochi (rice cakes), a treat you can sample with various toppings (including Sendai specialty kurumi,walnut paste).  There will also be cultural activities, displays, and traditional games for children. Returning JET Reception

Attention JET Program Alumni!

The Consulate-General of Japan at Houston will be holding a luncheon to honor the recently returned members of the Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Program, alumni, and supporters and we want you there. Please join us at the official residence of newly arrived Consul-General Jota Yamamoto and Mrs. Yamamoto on Saturday, December 10th from 11:45 AM to 1:45 PM as we welcome our newest alumni members while celebrating the JET Program’s 25 years.

Joining our celebration will be 14 Japanese English teachers, part of the Japan-United States Training Exchange (JUSTE) Program. These teachers are studying English teaching methods in Austin as part of a 6-month training course to better their English skills before returning to Junior High Schools all across Japan.

Come join us as we reminisce about our past experiences on the JET Program, help us to welcome our newest class of Alumni and cheer on the next generation of the Japanese Teachers of English. We hope to see you there.

Invitation: Reivigorating APEC: Roles for the US and Japan

The Consulate-General of Japan at Houston and the Japan-America Society of Houston will be co-hosting a lecture to discuss the coming APEC meeting in Hawaii. The title for the event is “Reinvigorating APEC: Roles for the U.S. and Japan” which will be delivered by Takashi Terada, a scholar from the Institute for Asian Studies at Waseda University, Tokyo Japan. The lecture will take place Friday, March 11, 2011 at the residence of the Consul-General of Japan. Reservations are required.

Trespassers Beware… Halloween Party!

Come join us on October 30th at sundown for another Haunted Halloween! Costumes are a must and we hope to see your creative pumpkin carvings again!
This year we will celebrate the fall with regional cuisine and autumn ales! Guests are encouraged to bring a dish or dessert of choice from their native land or region (think Texas Chili to Philly Cheese Steak and Sucre a la Crème to Louisiana Bread Pudding with Whiskey Sauce!). Prizes for best costume and best carved pumpkin!!
**We will be collecting personal hygiene products to donate to Thomas Street Clinic, a local HIV/AIDS clinic which provides services to HIV/AIDS-affected individuals in the Houston community.  Many of the individuals who seek services at this clinic lack access to even the most basic needs.  If you would like to donate please bring personal items such as: toothpaste, toothbrush, mouthwash, soap, shampoo, conditioner, shaving cream etc.

Karaoke Night!

Dear Texoma,

We haven’t seen you since Go-Kart Mayhem in August!!  But that’s okay, hopefully we’ll have a chance to catch up at one of the exciting events we have coming up ahead!

Next weekend, we will host a Karaoke Happy Hour and welcome back a few recently returned JET alumni.   If you haven’t been out with us in a while or if it’s your first time out with us at all- we’re looking forward to seeing you!  This will be a really great event to get to know our newest members, meet up with old friends, and have some good ol’ Japanese fun in the karaoke box!  The venue is BYOB with a corkage fee for wines.  Space in the box is limited, so please RSVP to Jennifer at by by Thursday, October 14th.  Cost is $15 per person.  And don’t worry, if you just aren’t into Karaoke- we promise not to make you sing.  Rather, you can just come and laugh at everyone.

The JET Farewell Reception

JET Farewell ReceptionEvery year, the Consul-General of Houston hosts a Farewell Reception for all departing JETs at the Consul-General residence. This year, the reception will take place on Friday, July 23. The reception is a great opportunity to socialize with the current JET administration, JET alum, and future alum of the program. There are a limited number of invitations available, so if you are interested in attending, please email by Friday, July 16. We will accommodate requests on a space-available basis, so request early.

We have a very special treat for you guys. Mrs. LaVerl Daily of the Tachibana School, whom some of you may remember from our recent event, has invited all JETAA members to be her guests at a demonstration and luncheon to celebrate the 45th Anniversary of the Ikenobo Ikebana Society of Texas. The 45th Headmaster of this international school of ikebana, Sen’ei Ikenobo, will be visiting all the way from Kyoto for this festive occasion to demonstrate this exquisite traditional art form.

Mrs. Daily has been generous enough to invite as many as are available to come. However, we need a headcount to give the hotel for seating and food.
